Considering vinyl flooring for your home? Learn more about the differences between vinyl and luxury vinyl to help narrow down your options in this post!

Vinyl flooring has been a staple in many of our bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms for decades, and it’s clear to see why.

From its excellent water and stain-resistant properties to its ability to withstand plenty of wear and tear, vinyl flooring is the best option for busy family households.

However, it may not make the perfect choice for other areas of the home – like in living rooms, bedrooms or halls, stairs and landing spaces, for example.

Luxury vinyl flooring, however, is much more suitable. But how is it different from regular vinyl?

Below, our experts at LJV Carpets & Flooring discuss the differences between vinyl and luxury vinyl flooring and assist you in making the right selection for your home.

Cost

Vinyl flooring is usually much more affordable compared to luxury vinyl, with prices ranging between £10-£20 per square metre depending on the design you choose.

Made from higher quality materials, luxury vinyl is typically better suited to bigger budgets – ranging between £20-£45 per square metre.

Installation In

Vinyl flooring is incredibly easy to install, and can often be laid in one seamless piece. And with no underlay necessary, it’s simple enough to do by yourself – even as a first-timer!

Luxury vinyl, on the other hand, uses a click-laying system like laminate flooring does, which can sometimes be tricky and time-consuming, especially on your own. Therefore, you may wish to hire a professional to help.

Thickness

Luxury vinyl flooring is much thicker than standard vinyl.

Standard vinyl flooring is usually around 2-6mm thick, making it slightly less comfortable underfoot and less soundproof. Whereas luxury vinyl, with its 4-5 layers, is around 8mm thick – and sometimes even thicker!

Durability

Being made from higher-quality materials, luxury vinyl flooring lasts much longer than bog-standard vinyl.

Vinyl flooring is more prone to wear and tear as it’s thinner. But luxury alternatives rarely scratch and scuff, and can last for up to 25 years if taken good care of.

Maintenance

Both regular and luxury vinyl flooring are incredibly easy to take care of. To keep them looking like new, they simply require a quick wipe down with a damp mop and mild cleaning solution once every week.

Waterproofing capabilities

Being vinyl-based, both types of flooring offer excellent waterproofing abilities, making them the perfect choice for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms and any other areas prone to moisture buildups.

Which is right for my home?

Both vinyl and luxury vinyl are great flooring options for any home, but the one you choose for yours ultimately comes down to your preferences, requirements and budget restraints.

If you’re looking for flooring that will last in your home for many years to come, that’s comfortable underfoot and offers unmatched soundproofing capabilities – and you can afford to pay a little bit more, then luxury vinyl will be more than ideal.
